Round & Round
Man is born free but is everywhere in chains
(Jean Jacques Rousseau)
(Jean Jacques Rousseau)
Despite the current mass uprising in many
of the Arab countries and a world-wide cry for freedom and democracy
everywhere, the world is fast become a more unequal and a potentially dangerous
place to live in. This is a far cry from the optimistic expectations of the early
founders of the modern industrial societies at the turn of the 20th
century that promised a brave new world in which hunger, disease and ignorance
would no longer plague human race in the light of the advancement of science
and technology.
Today, the high levels of hunger, disease
and illiteracy in the world, despite the incredible advancement of science and technology,
remind us that the concept of progress is an illusory idea. We are not going
anywhere. We just go round and round.
